Questions
Who Runs the Learn-A-Thon
The Shavuos Leanr-A-Thon is not your average school fundraiser. The Learn-A-Thon was started in 2010 by two First Grade mothers. They had 3 pronged goal: 1) To get more parents actively involved in school, 2) To increase the enthusiasm of the boys for their learning and to give them a sense of ownership of Yeshiva, and 3) To help the school financially.
Where Do the Funds Go?
Learn-A-Thon funds are kept separate from the school treasury and are used for projects dedicated to enhancing the learning experience of the students. Over the last decade plus, the Learn-A-Thon has been responsible for installing air-conditioning in the classrooms, creating a computer room program, playground enhancements, soccer nets, basketball hoops, and various other sports equipment. Additionally, funds have been dedicated to sponsoring siyumim and other extra-curricular programs for which parents had traditionally been asked for money.
Why No Tzdaka Dollars?
When the Yeshiva receives VMM or Arizal checks or the like, they lose a percentage of the money that was donated. Additionally, the LearnAThon takes place at an incredibly busy time of year, making it difficult for the exchange of tzedakah checks to take place and delay the closing of the LearnAThon campaign.
